Boothstown Coal Routes

This 4 mile walk tries to follow the coal routes that were a vital part of the growth of the area.

This map from the OS 1888-1913 series shows the Bridgewater Collieries Railway from Mosley Common to the basin at Boothstown and also the Tyldesly Colliery Railway. Both of these railway lines are included in the walk. The link to the Chaddock Level underground canal can also be seen to the east of Moss House Lane.

This map from the OS 1937-61 series shows the later addition to the Bridgewater Collieries Railway to Astley Green Colliery. The Tyldesley Collery Railway is now shown as a footpath and the last section to the canal is no longer present. The Thirlmere Aquaduct is also marked on this map.

Download the PDF and print A4, double sided, flip on short edge and the walk becomes an A5 brochure.
